Increase Your Browser Security

01/06/2009

One of the keys to creating Internet security while browsing the web is your browser. Your Internet browser is the vehicle that is used to travel around the Internet, and keeping this vehicle safe is one of the most ideal ways to protect yourself online. If you want to browse the Internet safely and to improve your level of personal privacy, increasing the security of your browser should be one of your main priorities.

Choose your Browser Carefully

There are a number of different options for you to consider. The first option that is up to you is which software you will choose to use for your Internet browser. While browsers like Internet Explorer and Netscape still dominate a large portion of the market, they are slowly losing ground to much more secure browsers like Mozilla's Sea Monkey, Firefox and Opera.

Most of your browser options will not be inherently better than one another, but these newer browsers are less often the targets of scammers. One of the best ways to protect your own self is to stay out of the limelight until software vendors and legislators can become more serious about Internet security.

Use your Browser's Security Features

Another key to hardening your Internet browser security involves proper education. Most Internet browsers have a large number of different options that allow you to control what is allowed, and what isn't allowed. Unfortunately, many users have absolutely no idea how these options work, or how they actually affect them.

For example: You have the option to "allow ActiveX controls" and plug-ins to run automatically, or you can choose to have the browser prompt you every time an occasion like this comes up. While it is okay for you to make your own individual judgments here, it is important for you to understand what these decisions actually mean when it relates to your Internet security and privacy, and using your browser to protect yourself online.

If we go back to our vehicle analogy from earlier, you can think about it this way: If you have a say in who is and is not allowed in your car, wouldn't you take the opportunity to set some ground rules? These options are designed to help you determine who is and is not allowed within your Internet browsing vehicle, and if you make the right decisions you truly can develop an edge over those who are trying to harm your Internet browsing experience.

Proper use of your browser and the Internet is the final leg of proper security for your browser. Do you know what it means to practice safe browsing? Some websites can prompt to download adware, activeX control programs, dialers and other dynamic web content. Do you really know what it means to trust these little programs on your computer? The sayings 'trust but verify' or 'trust but keep your eyes open' are worth considering in this instance. Spend some time learning about what these programs could mean for your computer. If you download the wrong file, it could mean lights out for you and your Internet privacy.
