Internet Credit Card Fraud Avoidance
01/07/2009
In recent years, you have probably heard a lot of information related to Internet credit card fraud, both the risk that it presents and the ways in which you can strive to stop it. Credit card fraud on the Internet is the most common electronic crime. Card numbers are easy to steal and misuse, especially if a consumer does not take the precautions they might not know are available to them.
While there is always at least a small risk in using the Internet for credit card transactions, the risk is only as great as what the credit card owner allows it to be. There are steps that can be taken to ensure a safe transaction.
How Do They Steal Credit Card Information?
There are multiple ways in which a credit card number can be stolen and misused over the Internet. First, a card may simply be stolen. When a credit card is stolen, the easiest way to use it is to use the Internet. Signatures are not required, only the information already printed on the card, making verification easy for the thief.
The second form is to actually steal the credit card number and information via the Internet without every laying a hand on the physical card. Credit card information is passed back and forth online constantly and if it is not handled with the proper encryption, it can be easily stolen. If a credit card number is input into a phishing website or through an unsecured channel, a hacker can steal that information and use it for themselves.
Credit Card Fraud Avoidance
Luckily, there are plenty of ways to ensure that when a credit card is used online, it is done safely and without risk of fraud. If you remain vigilant at all times, you can keep your money safely in your own pocket.
First, always cancel any stolen or lost credit cards immediately. Because of the access now available to the Internet, anyone who has stolen a card is capable of reaching the Internet and using it in minutes. If you can cancel the card before they have a chance to use it, you can save yourself a lot of time and money.
Second, many credit card companies offer fraud protection services. It may cost a small additional amount, but the extra security afforded by these services is not only useful, it is comforting. If the card is still somehow stolen, you are fully covered for any financial losses to your account.
Another good way to protect yourself online is to use fraud protection software. This software can require the additional input of extra security codes and passwords before a credit card can be used, essentially making it only valid on your computer. If a hacker tries to use your card number from their own computer, they will not be able to access the codes necessary to unlock it.
Finally, only purchase products with a credit card online from companies that offer full security features to protect your purchase. These sites will always tell you they have fraud protection in place, using some form of SSL encryption. If a website does not have encryption software in place, do not give them your credit card number. Also, ensure they have refund or chargeback policy in case something does happen. By purchasing only from reliable websites, you can ensure that your information remains safe at all times.
