Why Does Internet Privacy Matter?

01/06/2009

There has been a lot of attention paid in recent years to the importance of your Internet privacy. Advocate groups and government officials have strived to make it safer to use the Internet and more risky for a criminal to steal your information. But, what does this mean for the everyday Internet user such as you? Is it truly the epidemic they make it out to be or merely a small risk blown out of proportion?

Your Internet privacy is a major issue. It is a major issue because nearly anyone can be targeted for identity theft. The online criminals who take advantage of the holes and gaps in your Internet privacy do not care who you are, only how prepared you are, making your attention to the level of privacy you are able to maintain a very important task.

What Internet Privacy Entails

You pass a lot of information back and forth across the Internet and almost any of it could be at risk if you are not vigilant. Internet privacy refers to the websites you visit, the pictures you view, and the items you buy with your credit card. Keeping your information safe has become a major industry that has led to high security data encryption on the largest internet retailers such as Amazon.com. Without that protection, you have no way of knowing that your personal data is safe.

It is easier than ever for you to give away your personal information and not even realize it. The Internet has become such an engrained part of every day life that we rarely notice when we are asked to provide addresses or credit card numbers – almost every website does it. However, it is that lack of caution that has made it so much more important to increase your vigilance. New forms of software and identity stealing technology have only continued to grow as a result, leading to spyware, adware, and other malicious software being placed on your computer to steal information.

The Risks Associated with Internet Privacy

There are certain aspects of your Internet activities that are more risky than others. These common pieces of your Internet usage are often accessed and used by scammers to steal your information, including:

  • Browser Cookies – Every website places cookies on your computer. They are used to track your usage of their site and keep tabs on your preferences. Unfortunately, malicious websites also use cookies to do the same thing.
  • Spyware – Spyware can come from anywhere and you rarely know it is there. It can steal your personal information, record your email addresses, or give hackers access to your hard drives.
  • Email Spam – That spam in your email inbox is not always just annoying. Sometimes it is malicious and if you click on a link or believe an outrageous claim, your privacy could be breached.
  • Phishing – The fastest growing form of Internet fraud is phishing. By using common websites and access methods to take advantage of those who are not aware of the risk signs, phishers are able to steal vast arrays of personal information.

There are any number of ways these and dozens of other methods can be used by scammers, identity thieves and other criminals to impinge on your Internet privacy. The best thing you can do to remain safe is to research these methods, know the warning signs, and always keep updated Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, and Firewall software on your computer.
